People are always asking me how I "got started". Well, I started off as a mobile DJ and club bouncer, just playing the music, doing gigs, and having fun. After a couple of years (like 10 or 12) of doing this , I noticed "my" music wasn't being played on the radio anymore, and a lot of people were asking for it. The "underground & bootleg" markets were swelling from requests. I applied as a DJ to a couple of L.A. radio stations, but they all turned me down, went off the air, or changed formats. They told me my music was "dead in the water", and a Chicano audience just didn't exist anymore. I was beginning to feel like a dinosaur!
I JUST WANTED TO PLAY THE MUSIC! Always remembering the saying "A winner never quits, and a quitter never wins" from my U.S. Marine Corps days, I just kept adding to my music collection, doing gigs, attending shows, and supporting the Chicano Music artists and events...and never forgetting to have fun doing what I love! I started meeting a lot of good people and a network just naturally grew around me. Things started happening before I knew it...and the fun has never stopped! AND I STILL JUST WANT TO PLAY THE MUSIC!
As I began to meet people from other States and Countries, I began to realize just how big the music world is, and how much history of Chicano Music & artists is unknown to the general public at large, which pretty much used to feed off of stereotypes of Chicano Musicians outside of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas~ not knowing the true flavor & spirit of Chicano Rock & Roll, Latin soul, Brown flavored R&B, the fine feeling of cruising & being in love, and looking good & Brown while doing it.... BUT NOT ANYMORE !!
